While fall may be in the air, there’s still a good six weeks left of summer, and the sunscreen market is a hot topic.
Endless options are heavily stocked on store shelves from mineral to chemical offering varying levels of protection, and an array of formats from which to choose. Currently, the top-growing sunscreen formats in search in the US are roll on and stick.
Roll-On Formats, a Seamless Sunscreen Option
While slathering on sunscreen can feel like a chore, especially for those identifying as part of the “I hate lotion” camp, the product in a convenient roll-on format is a more seamless option for even the most impatient consumers.
In fact, roll on sunscreens are experiencing a remarkable +61.3% YoY growth, according to NYC-based beauty trend tracker Spate. Top volume search queries include roll on sunscreen, sun bum roll on sunscreen, and roll on zinc sunscreen. For brands seeking an opportunity to break into the space, Spate encourages them to strike while the iron is hot.
Sunscreen’s uptick in stick popularity is no surprise, as many makeup products have also found their way into a convenient stick format (eyeshadow sticks, blush sticks, etc.). Sticks make application a breeze. The top volume search queries for stick alongside sunscreen are sunscreen stick, Shiseido stick, Supergoop glow stick, sunscreen stick for face, and Isntree sunscreen stick. And the top-growing brands for the sunscreen stick are Shiseido, Supergoop!, Neutrogena, and Isntree. The love for sunscreen sticks (+40.4% YoY) doesn’t stop in the US either; this trend is also growing +8.2% YoY in South Korea.
