New data commissioned by beauty retailer The Body Shop unveils the importance of ethical standards for gift-giving this holiday season—with customers most interested in purchasing products that are responsibly-sourced and sustainably made by brands providing ethical working conditions.
The research shows customers expect to spend less. The majority of consumers expect to spend less this holiday season compared to last year, but the majority agree that a sustainable and ethically-sourced gift option at a reasonable price point would influence their holiday shopping decision.
More than half of consumers say purchasing from a brand that practices sustainable packaging and sourcing is important to them.
Working Conditions
And, of all the issues, employees’ working conditions are top of mind. Nearly two-thirds say purchasing from a brand that provides ethical working conditions is important to them, including 72% of respondents ages 18-34.
Brand activism is taking a back seat to product sustainability and ethics. Although the majority of consumers prefer to choose a brand that aligns with their personal values for holiday shopping, less than half say a brand's community involvement and activism efforts are important to them.
