From ice cream to skin cream, palm oil remains a key component of many fast-moving consumer products. But cultivating palm oil often requires destroying rainforests ito create large-scale plantations n Indonesia and Malaysia. These two countries account for more than 80% of global palm oil production. Years ago, key players in the FMCG space formed the Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil. Joining RSPO means reducing palm farming’s impact on the environment. More recently, in 2018, Estée Lauder Cos., BASF and others created Project Lampung. It provides technical education and training to 1,003 independent palm oil smallholders and helped 313 farmers receive official RSPO certification.
