Paul Thau, a prolific cosmetic chemist who had a long career with Cosmair/L’Oréal, died. He was 91.
Thau graduated from the Columbia University College of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 1954. Upon graduation, he worked for a short time in pharmacies before beginning his career in cosmetic chemistry. His career spanned more than 50 years, and included R&D positions at Revlon, Bristol-Myers, Ciba-Geigy and Warner Lambert. At L’Oréal, Thau rose to the position of assistant vice president of cosmetic R&D and later, senior research fellow.
Following his retirement from L’Oréal, Thau formed PaCar Tech LLC, a cosmetic consulting company.
Thau was a dedicated member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists. He was president of the New York Chapter in 1971. He served as president of the Society and in 2005, he received the Maison G. deNavarre Medal Award, the Society’s highest honor.
He is survived by his wife Carole; daughters Rona and Robin, and grandchildren, Lauren and Jake.
