Sephora’s Take-Back Program Repurposes Beauty Products To Cut Waste

To date, more than 10,860 pounds of hard-to-recycle material have been collected.

With 95% of cosmetic packaging tossed in the trash, packaging waste is one of the biggest sustainability challenges facing the beauty industry. What’s more, most of it isn’t accepted in curbside recycling programs due to size or materials. The result is an annual 8 million tons of plastic flooding oceans, according to Sephora.

Beauty (Re)Purposed Program

As Earth Day approaches, Sephora has an assortment of refillable beauty products from more than 45 brands including viral favorites like Glow Recipe, Fenty Beauty, Ouai, Maison Margiela, Josie Maran and more. Coupled with Sephora’s empties take back program, Beauty (Re)Purposed, Sephora offers a start-to-finish solution for a more sustainable beauty routine that avoids landfills.

The Beauty (Re)Purposed program allows consumers to make more sustainable choices and give their beauty products a second life. The empties collection program aims to help reduce hard-to-recycle packaging waste in the beauty and wellness industry and is available at all North American locations.

To date, Beauty (Re)Purposed has collected more than 10,860 pounds of hard-to-recycle material – the equivalent of about 217,220 lipstick tubes, per the company.
