As Memorial Day weekend marked the start of #Summer2022, a former Bachelorette contestant is on a mission to encourage outdoor quality time between family and children.
Ali Fedotowsky-Manno—a mother of two known for starring on ABC’s "The Bachelor" and the sixth Bachelorette—recently teamed with Banana Boat to launch a #SunDaysAreFunDays” campaign on social media. The campaign calls on all kids to post photos of themselves engaging in the fun and creative outdoor activities the brand has planned all summer long as they practice safe sun.
“Seventy-five percent of the time we spend with our children throughout their entire lives is before they are 12 years old,” wrote Fedotowsky-Manno in an Instagram post. “Knowing that statistic alone makes me even more determined to soak up my time with them this summer. And I absolutely love it when brands use their platforms to help people (beyond creating a great product).”
She continued, “I’m pumped to tell you guys that I have teamed up with @bananaboatbrand to share fun outdoor activities to do with your kiddos this summer. We want to make sure that #SunDaysAreFunDays. Some of the stuff is so, so, so creative and I’m really excited to share it with you guys all throughout the summer and hopefully help and encourage parents (and myself!) to get outside and enjoy these beautiful sunny summer days with the kiddos!”
Banana Boat’s Kids Sport Roll-On SPF 60+
While applying (and reapplying every two hours) generous amounts of Banana Boat’s Kids Sport Roll-On SPF 60+, happy kids by and large are staging do-it-yourself Summer Olympics in their backyards. Other activities include bring-your-own (BYO) Beach Parties using an inflatable pool with beach chairs, bowling with recycled water bottles and getting playfully soaked after games of water balloon pinatas—while keeping their skin protected from the sun’s harmful rays.
Pediatrician-tested, Kids Sport Roll-On SPF 60+ is a water-resistant formula that is Banana Boat says easier to apply than traditional sunscreen and won’t run into and sting kids’ eyes. Key ingredients include 9.0% homosalate, 4.5% octisalate and 6.5% octocrylene.
“The Banana Boat Kids Sport Roll-On SPF 60+ is a game-changer,” Fedotowsky-Manno told Happi. “As all parents know, putting sunscreen on your child’s face can be quite a task. But Banana Boat’s roll-on makes it so much easier! My kids almost like getting it applied. Almost,” she said with a wink. “The fact that it has such a high SPF is super important to me as their mom to keep them safe from the sun.”
A longstanding brand in sun protection, Banana Boat is owned by Edgewell Personal Care, which was ranked No. 27 in Happi’s 2021 Top 50 Report.
Consumers Pay a High Price Without Proper Sunscreen
The National Library of Medicine says childhood is particularly a vulnerable time for the photocarcinogenic effects of the sun to take hold, as kids spend more time outdoors than adults and their skin is more sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays. While the negative effects of solar radiation are accumulated during the course of one’s lifetime, 80% of total lifetime sun exposure happens before age 18. Indeed, teaching kids to apply sunscreen early on in life is paramount for optimal skin health as they age.
“I tell them it’s important to keep them safe, not only long term from bigger overall health concerns,” said Fedotowsky-Manno when speaking to her kids, Molly, 5, and Riley, 4. “But in the short term, we talk about sunburns and how bad it would feel if they got one and that we put on sunscreen to keep them safe.”
Skin cancer is extremely common in the US. In fact, the number of Americans who have been diagnosed with the disease at some point in the last three decades is estimated to be higher than the number of all other cancers combined. The disease has created substantial health care costs for the nation: almost 5 million people are treated for all skin cancers, carrying an annual cost of roughly $8.1 billion.
