First off, In-Cosmetics 2010 was a rousing success. No, I don’t know how many kilos of raw materials were exchanged nor do I know how many new ideas were generated on the show floor during our week in Paris last month. No, the reason why In-Cosmetics was such a huge success was that suppliers were selling, buyers were buying and everyone was in general agreement that the industry is gaining momentum and building on a solid quarter or two after a dismal two years.
Sure, there were a couple of naysayers who warned of double dips and the like, but overall the mood at this In-Cosmetics, the 20th anniversary show, in fact, was definitely optimistic, which should bode well for suppliers, marketers and of course, consumers for the remainder of 2010 and into 2011.
Yes, I, and many other attendees, left the show in high spirits. Leaving Paris, however, was something else entirely. The In-Cosmetics get-away day was Friday, April 16. But the volcano plume in Iceland wreaked havoc on European airspace. After two cancellations, and a tentative flight on April 26, I—and what seemed like half the U.S. beauty industry—was left wandering around the Champs Elysees, dazed and a bit confused, muttering about disrupted flight schedules and new itineraries. It was only after the extraordinary efforts of a New Jersey travel agent (call me for Maria Pollio’s number at Protravel International in Roseland, NJ!), that I got home; but as I write this there are plenty of cosmetics executives still stuck in Paris.
Oh, I know they’ll all find their way back…after all, we’ve got a big show in the States this month—the New York Society of Cosmetic Chemists’ Supplier’s Day runs May 11-12 at the New Jersey Exposition Center in Raritan, NJ. If you’re headed to the show, be sure to stop by the Happi booth to exchange travel stories.
