With significant progress in the realm of sustainability in the beauty industry, the trend is, well, cycling upward.

According to market research firm Spate, the top growing sustainability trends in rising clusters are upcycling and chemical recycling.

Upcycled Packaging, Please

Familiarity with upcycling has been reflective in the #empties photos on Instagram, demonstrating consumer use of – for example – empty Diptyque candles as makeup brush holders. And for good reason. Currently, there are 34.1K average monthly searches and a +34.6% year-over-year (YoY) growth for the term “upcycled.”

Searches for upcycled products span furniture, clothing, art and gardening, indicating a holistic desire for this kind of product, analysts say. Spate encourages beauty brands to use upcycled packaging.

Chemical Recycling

Chemical recycling is the process of converting polymeric waste by changing its chemical structure and turning it back into substances that can be used as raw materials for the manufacturing of plastics or other products.

Top searches indicate consumer interest in finding centers near them that use chemical recycling. Cognizant of consumer interest, Spate encourages beauty brands to capitalize on this desire by educating consumers on type of recycling practice.
