RIFM Congratulates Safety Assessment Team for Receiving Society of Toxicology 2025 Award

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials congratulated researcher Dr. Marissa Guttenberg for earing Best Paper of the Year in the Immunotoxicology Specialty Section from the Society of Toxicology.

Dr. Guttenberg was the lead author of the award-winning study, “Tissue-Resident Alveolar Macrophages Reduce Ozone-induced Inflammation via MerTK-mediated Efferocytosis,” published in the “American Journal of Respiratory Cell and Molecular Biology” in February 2024.

The study provides important new insights into how tissue-resident alveolar macrophages help resolve lung inflammation caused by ozone exposure, a key air pollutant.

“It is a great honor for us to receive this recognition from the Society of Toxicology,” said Dr. Guttenberg. “I am grateful to my co-authors and mentors for their guidance and collaboration. This research highlights the important role of alveolar macrophages in lung health, and I am proud to contribute to the growing understanding of immune responses to environmental exposures.”

Ozone exposure is a significant environmental health concern, particularly for vulnerable populations. Dr. Guttenberg’s research highlights the essential role of alveolar macrophages in mitigating inflammation and could inform future strategies for reducing the impact of air pollution on respiratory health.
