Crystal Porter of Mane Insights will share insights on the implications of lifestyle on hair and scalp.
February 2, 2023
By: Christine Esposito
Editor-in-Chief
Kicking off its 2023 theme of “Reimagining Renewal and Wellness,” NYSCC has planned a special event on Hair Care and Wellness for Feb 28 at the Chart House in Weehawken, NJ. Speakers include Crystal E. Porter, a hair scientist and owner of Mane Insights, and Mike Davis, principal scientist, The Procter & Gamble Company. Davis will present: “Scalp Application of Antioxidants Improves Scalp Condition and Reduces Hair Shedding in Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-Controlled Clinical Trials.” Porter will present: “The Implications of Lifestyle on Hair and Scalp Health.” Porter is hair scientist and owner of Mane Insights, Inc., where she conducts research studying the hair and scalp of people of African descent. She is passionate about debunking myths and empowering others to properly care for their hair. As a former cosmetic scientist with Unilever and L’Oréal USA, Porter was able to conduct research and study the biophysical characteristics of hair in pigmented populations. Not only has she studied, but also contributed to the scientific community by authoring scientific papers, book chapters and delivering presentations regarding ethnic hair. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from Chicago State University and her Doctorate degree from Missouri University of Science and Technology in Physical Polymer Chemistry. Davis joined The Procter & Gamble Company in 1998 in P&G Pharmaceuticals, where he conducted research on small molecule therapies for peripheral arterial disease. In 2006, he joined P&G Hair Care in the product claims support division. In June of 2011 he joined Hair Biology Group and is now a lead technologist supporting the Head and Shoulders and the KeepItAnchored hair retention brands. His work on hair structure has led to molecular understanding of hair production and retention. He serves as a reviewer for multiple journals and is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Cosmetic Science. The program co-chairs are Amber O. Evans, Ph.D. of Moroccanoil and Farahdia Edouard of Croda. The event begins at 5pm with registration and a networking/cocktail reception. NYSCC members are $45; non-members are $80; students are $20 and emeritus members are free. Registration is open now.
