US Patent No. 11,154,522; Dermala has been awarded a patent for compositions and methods for treating acne vulgaris. This is the second patent in the company’s intellectual property portfolio that covers using the human microbiome to treat and prevent acne. The company developed a novel technology for enhanced targeted delivery of human microbiome-derived postbiotic metabolites into specific layers of the skin. This results in higher treatment efficacy due to targeted inhibition of C. acnes in follicles and reducing inflammation while avoiding side effects. The microbiome-derived postbiotics derived from beneficial bacteria help correct the microbiome dysbiosis associated with acne and produce faster and longer-lasting results.

Dermala was also awarded another patent earlier this year for postbiotics for acne care.

This week, the company's was recognized in Cosmopolitan’s inaugural Holy Grail Acne Awards. The company picked Dermala’s Oat So Sweet Daily Moisturizer for Blemish-Prone Skin as best moisturizer.

Oat So Sweet is a soothing light moisturizer formulated with prebiotics and postbiotics to balance and restore the skin microbiome. Key ingredients incude colloidal oatmeal, niacinamide, licorice root extract, ceramides, avocado oil, and green tea leaf.  Dermala says its patented SE Microbiome Complex and SE Sugar Complex are the true differentiators in the formulation, providing naturally occurring prebiotics and postbiotics that support a balanced microbiome by killing C. acnes, the acne-causing bacteria while promoting the growth of S. epidermidis, the beneficial, acne-fighting bacteria.
