Textured hair and hair shrinkage are growing in consumer interest when it comes to hair searches in the US.

According to market research firm Spate, some of the top-growing related keywords include medium, men, short, long and afro hair, highlighting specific hair types consumers are concerned about when it comes to textured hair. Searches for men specifically offer an opportunity for a natural hair care brand to target this demographic—possibly with neutral-colored branding, a musky fragrance and “For Men” slapped on the label.

Formulations Needed for the Curly-Haired Consumer

Consumers are also searching for shampoo alongside textured hair, revealing an opportunity for brands to position and formulate shampoos specifically for textured hair.

Hair shrinkage, in layman's terms, is when lengthy curls stretch out to form tight coils. One of the top searches alongside hair shrinkage is 4C, indicating a specific hair type consumers are interested in when it comes to addressing hair shrinkage.

Spate encourages brands to use this opportunity to call out and boldly display hair types on their curly girl product labels. Another top search alongside hair shrinkage is how to stop, and there's ample room here for education. Often, when consumers have hair concerns, they are seeking more information on the issue and a helpful solution. Commissioning UGC creators to explain and offer their favorite products (#sponsored) and solutions via video is one of the easiest ways to gain new customers, Spate analysts say.
