Leave it to the dog days of summer to bring on hairy situations. Literally.

According to beauty trend tracker Spate, the moment’s fastest-growing hair concerns are waxy hair and hormonal hair loss. The two largest hair concerns by volume are curly hair, with 5.5 million average monthly searches, and hair growth, with 1.3 million average monthly searches. This means consumers are searching for solutions to many other hair concerns.

Waxy Hair

Waxy hair has 4.9K average monthly searches and a +193.4% growth in searches compared to last year. Analysts say consumers are concerned, as evidenced by searches for “why does my hair feel waxy,” “hair feels waxy after washing” and “how to remove waxy buildup from hair.” Spate says there is significant room for brands to help consumers by promoting products that improve waxy hair.

Clarifying shampoos, for instance, could rebrand or market the term “waxy hair” front and center on their packaging. Brands can also educate customers about why their hair feels waxy and how haircare can help, including potential causes like hard water or product buildup. Some consumers already know their hair is waxy because of hair buildup; this presents another opportunity for brands to offer different products depending on the cause of the buildup.

Hair Loss

Hair loss, particularly hormonal hair loss, is a significant concern with increasing interest among consumers. With an average of 4.5K monthly searches and a +67.4% growth in searches compared to last year, consumers are seeking answers to questions such as “how to stop hormonal hair loss,” “can hormonal hair loss be reversed,” and available treatments.

This issue is a widespread concern, analysts say, and opportunity exists for hair care and supplement brands to educate consumers and provide solutions. Aside from supplements or at-home remedies, Spate says there is also potential for treatments and in-office procedures to address this issue, possibly in combination with other hair services.

Analysts say major treatments aren’t for everyone, as many consumers prefer natural solutions.
