The web has rapidly risen to the No. 3 channel (behind supermarkets and mass merchandisers) where women shop, according to a new study byWSL Strategic Retail How America Shops. WSL’s Trends from the Edge report reveals that24% of women are shopping the internet weekly, up from 10% just two years ago.The top two reasons shoppers shop online are free shipping and saving time, followed by the availability of other shoppers’ reviews, finding brands not in stores, easy to buy and return, and free samples and coupons.

According to WSL, traditional retailers must heed the danger signs of the growing dominance of the internet as “clicks”-only retailers are vastly more popular than the online offerings of traditional retailers with women shopping Amazon 57% and eBay 37% as compared with Walmart 7%, JC Penney 6% and Target, Kohl’s, Walgreens, CVS/pharmacy, Sam’s Club, Costco and Bath & Body Works all below 5%.
