RIFM Scientists To Present Poster Session at American Chemical Society Fall 2024 Conference

Structural activity groups are a focus in the research.

The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials’ Senior Scientist for Chemistry & Genotoxicity Holger Moustakas, PhD and Senior Associate Scientist for Chemistry Jake Muldoon, PhD will participate at the American Chemical Society’s Fall 2024 conference in Denver, Aug. 18-22, 2024.

The Poster session—“Development and application of structural activity groups for chemical classification and clustering as a non-animal method for safety assessment”—is set for Tuesday, Aug. 20 from 7-9pm.

Drs. Moustakas and Muldoon will present results on developing “a robust, reliable, and reproducible method of classifying large sets of chemicals into smaller, biologically relevant subsets through the use of Structural Activity Groups, or SAGs,” said RIFM in a media statement.

More on Structural Activity Groups

“SAGs allow easy, transparent, and repeatable separation of an inventory of thousands of chemicals into manageable groups of chemicals that share the same functionalities,” Dr. Moustakas explained. “The results of this process support predictive toxicology, risk-assessment prioritization, and read-across, critical alternatives to avoiding animal testing. Our poster presentation shows how we can group materials efficiently to use the data we have better to improve read-across and avoid animal testing.”

“We are excited to attend the ACS Fall 2024 Meeting,” Dr. Muldoon said. “The event connects us with fellow chemists and toxicologists we may not otherwise interact with. These connections allow for numerous fruitful conversations and potential collaborations based on our work and the new animal-alternative work we encounter there.”
