American Society of Perfumers (ASP) invites you to join Fabergé expert Nick Nicholson when he delivers “The Scent of Empire,” a lecture on the history of perfume in Russia and the contributions of the House of Fabergé to the world of perfume. The May 7 event is at Van Vleck House & Gardens, Upper Montclair, NJ. It includes a social hour with hors d’oeuvres, followed by an engaging lecture from Nicholson on the history of perfume in Russia and the contributions of the House of Fabergé to the world of perfume.

Nicholson, a distinguished historian and author, has an extensive background in Russian decorative arts. He began his career at Christie’s, specializing in Russian works of art, and later served as the American curator for the exhibition “Jewels of the Romanovs; Treasures from the Russian Imperial Court.” Currently, he holds the position of Director of Russian Works of Art at Heritage Auctions.

The House of Fabergé, founded in 1842 by Gustav Fabergé, is celebrated for its exquisite craftsmanship, particularly the famed Imperial Easter eggs. Beyond these jeweled masterpieces, Fabergé made many perfume-related articles in gold, enamel, and gems for the Russian Imperial family and the Russian aristocracy.

Nicholson’s upcoming lecture promises to delve into this rich history, exploring how French perfumers moved to Russia in the 18th century, bringing the art of perfumery with them, how 19th century Russian aristocrats were among the best client in the world for British and French perfumers, and how, after the Russian revolution, Russian-trained perfumers emigrated to France, bringing their skills back to France, and helping to create such masterpieces as Cuir de Russie, and Chanel No. 5.
