NY Chapter Gets Cookin’ at Sept. 24 Cultural Event
The New York Chapter of SCC will hold its cultural event, an interactive cooking experience, on Sept. 24 at the James Ward Mansion in Westfield, NJ. The event will include wine, appetizers, dinner and dessert as well as lessons from professional chefs on how to prepare Italian and Asian cuisine.

New England Chapter To Hold Monthly Meeting Sept. 17
"Novel Method of Encapsulating both Hydrophobic and Hydrophilic Materials for Use in Personal Care” will be the topic of the next meeting of the New England Chapter, which will be held Sept. 17 at O’Connor’s Restaurant and Pub in Worcester, MA. Susan Jordan, a senior scientist with Dow Personal Care, will discuss novel ethylene oxide/ butylene oxide block copolymers designed to spontaneously form multi-lamellar vesicles with simple mixing.

SCC Officer Ballot Mailing Out This Month
SCC has announced the 2009 nominations for the governing body of the Society. Candidates for office are: Vice President-Elect: Joseph Dallal and Perry Romanowski; Secretary: Dawn Burke-Colvin and Amy Marshall; Director, Area I: Courtney Clay and Peter Tsolis; Director, Area II: Kevin Tibbs and Sirlei Waterhouse; and Director, Area IV: Samuel Cooper and Michael Licciardello.
Ballots, which will be mailed Oct. 15, and are due back Nov. 15.
October Courses To Cover Thickeners, Raw Materials
The SCC continuing education program for October will include two courses. The first course on gums, thickeners and polymers will be held Oct. 15 at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel, Newark, NJ. The course will address the practical aspects of rheology control in personal care formulations as well asbackground to understand and appreciate the different modes by which viscosity can be delivered and controlled. A detailed overview of commercially available rheology modifier classes is also scheduled.
R&D, formulation and QA scientists as well as sales people are encouraged to attend.
The instructor is Abe Vaynberg, who is currently a research scientist working in the personal care group at Hercules Inc.
On Oct. 28-29, SCC will hold a course on cosmetic raw materials, also at the Newark Airport Hotel. The chemical backbone of most ingredients is fatty materials. A complete review of fatty acids and alcohols will be covered. These include nomenclature, production methods, by-products, specifications and methods. How to produce soap and soap emulsions will also be covered.
The instructors are David C. Steinberg, who has more than 35 years of experience in cosmetics and was the founder of the Masters Degree program in Cosmetic Sciences at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and Richard J. Thabit, who has more than 40 years of experience in raw material and finished product design.
