Clorox-owned Burt's Bees, Inc. has been named in a lawsuit filed last week in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. The defendant says the product is not as claimed and is calling out the natural products company for stating that its natural shampoo for dogs is made of 99.7% natural products.

According to a report from The Triangle Business Journal, the lawsuit was filed on behalf of lead plaintiff Moshe Goldfarb who purchased Burt’s Bees products for his Rottweiler-golden retriever mix. The pet owner reportedly purchased Burt’s Bees 2-in-1 Tearless Shampoo & Conditioner for Puppies and Burt’s Bees Oatmeal Shampoo for Dogs.

According to the Burt’s Bees pet products website, the 2-in-1 product’s ingredient are: water, coco betaine, coco glucoside, glyceryl oleate, disodium cocoyl glutamate, glycerin, xanthan gum, honey, beeswax, colloidal oatmeal, linum usitatissimum (linseed) oil, buttermilk powder, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate. The oatmeal shampoo contains water, coco betaine, coco glucoside, glyceryl oleate, disodium cocoyl glutamate, glycerin, xanthan gum, camelia sinensis (green tea) extract, colloidal oatmeal, honey, beeswax, potassium sorbatea and sodium benzoate.

The pet care market is a growing category and over the past several years human personal care companies have joined the fray to serve their consumers’ furry friends. There has been a “clean beauty” pet care launch from a brand called Rowan. Additional players in pet care include Happi Top 50 company Paul Mitchell’s John Paul Pet
