Urban Skin Rx, a maker of beauty products for darker skin tones, is rolling out two sun care products ahead of Juneteenth. June 19 is a new federal holiday, celebrating the emancipation of African-Americans who had been enslaved in the US. To honor Juneteenth,
Urban Skin Rx will donate $10,000 to the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Engineers (NOBCChE).
According to company founder Rachel Roff, formulating a mineral sunscreen for darker skin tones is difficult because it can leave a white residue on skin.
Roff, an aesthetician, is going even further. She launched The Melanin Experts, a program to serve consumers of color. She also hired licensed medical estheticians to run the Urban Skin Rx customer service department to help customers find the product that meets their needs. The Urban Skin Rx staff is more than 50% Black and all product testing is done in-house.
