Aveda has announced the Hypernature collection, a collaboration by members of Aveda’s North America Artistic Team, Gabo Hernandez, Vanessa Whitmarsh, Luiz Gonzalez, Patrick Ina and Anne Skubis, with hair direction by Aveda Global Artistic Director, Hair Styling, Allen Ruiz.
Inspired by nature, this collection explores techniques across cut, color and styling. The concept idea originated from a fashion piece made from ferns, but visually went deeper as the team explored images and videos of plants under a microscopic lens, gaining inspiration by the color, structure and fluidity of this extreme close-up view, and the idea that nothing living is entirely solid or still. Nature is always fluid and moving, starting at the cellular level, so the hair color in this collection mimics nature’s patterns, while the haircuts and textures create shapes to showcase all the elements together.
Bold Colors and Graphic Styling
Hypernature delivers bold colors and graphic styling and cuts, Aveda-exclusive techniques designed to inspire and educate while ultimately translating to unique looks that anyone can wear. The collection includes a total of ten looks.
“This look mixes extreme bold color with subtle softness- just like nature,” said Gabo Hernandez of the color and the long hair cut with a hidden bilevel fringe on Maria. To achieve this color, Hernandez started by applying Aveda botanical repair professional equalizing primer to the hair and combing through. He then sectioned the hair, isolating the top veil and applied one of the five color formulas. All formulas were applied on pre-lightened hair. He used a mix of Aveda full spectrum permanent and Aveda full spectrum vibrants. For the colored fashion veil, he started at the top and creating a color-melt with feathering angular strokes as he worked downward, creating an X pattern between colors. Once processed, the dark base was rinsed and washed with Aveda botanical repair™ shampoo and conditioner. Lastly, he rinsed the fashion veil with cold water.
“This look overlays optical illusions with depth and patterns,” said Luis Gonzalez of the vibrantly patterned hair on Mackenzie.
To achieve this look, Gonzalez pre-lightened the hair where he wanted to create the effect. He used four different color formulas using full spectrum vibrants. To maintain a balanced effect, he started on the left side of the head and moved to the right side, the back left and then the back right. He then took a 1/8 of an inch horizontal subsection and placed a shield beneath it. Using painter’s tape to mark out diagonal lines he created the triangular shapes, then applying color to the triangular shapes, alternating formulas. Creative in his color placements, Gonzalez made multiple patterns and used a color-melting technique to create a balanced visual effect. He then placed the shield on top of the subsection to layer shapes and colors in subsequent sections. After processing for 20 minutes, he rinsed with water until clear and removed the painter’s tape as he rinsed.
“When setting hair, use a curling iron that is a size smaller than you think you need,” said Vanessa Whitmarsh about creating this exaggerated macro halo of curls on Sophia. Before being styled by Whitmarsh, the hair first treated with Aveda botanical repair professional equalizing primer and combed through. Then it was colored with Aveda enlightenment blonding, full spectrum permanent and full spectrum deep. Aveda’s botanical repair strengthening shampoo was used along with Aveda’s botanical repair™ professional bond activator: rich and finally finished with a botanical repair treatment to help protect the integrity of the hair. To achieve the hair style, Whitmarsh began at the nape of the neck taking brush-size subsections and smoothing the hair with a blow dryer and comb attachment. She worked toward the front of the head until the hair was completely dry. Again, beginning at the nape, she curled the hair in bricklay subsections with a ¼-inch iron working toward the front of the head until complete. Once the hair was cooled, she separated the curls with her fingers and followed with a wide-tooth comb and finally shaping the style using a finishing brush.
