US Patent No. 11,819,559 B2 (Catherine Chiou, Ryuji Hara); L’Oréal, Paris, has patented a cosmetic composition (makeup remover) that contains an antimicrobial agent comprising 4-hydroxyacetophenone present from about 0.2-1% by weight of the composition; at least one additional antimicrobial agent comprising piroctone olamine present from about 0.05-1.5% by weight of the composition; isohexadecane present from about 3-7% by weight of the composition; isopropyl myristate present from about 3-7% by weight of the composition; dicaprylyl ether present from about 1-2% by weight of the composition; glycerin present from about 1-5% by weight of the composition; hexylene glycol present from about 1-2% by weight of the composition; acrylates/C10-30 alkyl acrylate crosspolymer present from about 0.01-0.1% by weight of the composition; and a balance of water.
The composition is free or essentially free of salicylic acid, surfactants, and antimicrobials that comprise any one or more of pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, hexyl glycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, octylglycerin, benzylglycerin, 3-heptoyl-2,2-propandiol, and 1,2-hexandiol.
It imparts reduced eye irritation relative to an otherwise identical comparative composition having one or more of pentylene glycol, phenoxyethanol, hexyl glycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, octylglycerin, benzylglycerin, 3-heptoyl-2,2-propandiol, or 1,2-hexandiol in lieu of the piroctone olamine.
