Brown Girl Jane, a Black-owned fine fragrance brand and 2023 Sephora Accelerate graduate, is the winner of the retailer’s inaugural Sephora Beauty Grant in partnership with Fifteen Percent Pledge.
The announcement was made at the annual 15 Percent Pledge Gala, which took place in Los Angeles, CA, with the grant winner being announced by Artemis Patrick, president of Sephora North America, and Danessa Myricks, founder of Danessa Myricks Beauty.
The Sephora Beauty Grant is a $100,000 cash prize and a year-long mentorship program that aims to support and empower Black- owned prestige beauty brands in the US. The grant, a reflection of the retailer’s ongoing commitment to create belonging for all in beauty, is part of its ongoing partnership with Fifteen Percent Pledge, a non-profit organization that advocates for at least 15% of shelf space in major retailers to be dedicated to Black-owned businesses.
In June 2020, Sephora became the first major retailer to take the 15 Percent Pledge and has since doubled its assortment of Black-owned brands including hitting the 15% benchmark in prestige haircare last year.
Founded by Malaika Jones and co-founders Tai Beauchamp and Nia Jones, Brown Girl Jane was selected as the winner from more than 275 grant applicants who were evaluated based on their brand vision, product, values and impact to-date, among other attributes. Founded with a shared passion for creating fragrances that celebrate the beauty and diversity of Black women, Brown Girl Jane is known for scents that are powered by clinically-studied mood enhancement technology – all made with ethically-sourced, sustainable, cruelty-free and vegan ingredients.
