The Clorox Company has topped Barron’s annual list of the 100 Most Sustainable US Companies for the second consecutive year.

The 2024 list also included big names such as P&G, Estée Lauder, Colgate-Palmolive and others.

For Barron’s seventh ranking of the most sustainable companies, Calvert Research and Management scored the 1,000 largest publicly-traded companies across 230 environmental, social and governance (ESG) performance indicators.

The top 100 companies achieved the highest scores across hundreds of ESG metrics, ranging from workplace diversity to greenhouse-gas emissions.

Clorox’s ESG Accomplishments

In the Barron list, Clorox Company had a final score of 77.

Clorox said it made “considerable progress” toward its ESG goals. Among its accomplishments, the company said it achieved and continues to maintain pay equity commitment (meaning no statistically significant differences in pay) across gender globally and races/ethnicities in the US. Clorox implemented a new ESG governance structure to further integrate ESG priorities, allocate resources and assign decision-making authority and accountability across its business.

Clorox also sustained diversity in its board of directors; 50% are female and 25% are people of color, said the owner of Burt’s Bees and Clorox household cleaning brands.

The company also published its climate action plan outlining its approach to achieving its 2030 science-based targets and 2050 net-zero commitment. Clorox also maintained its goal to source 100% of its electricity from renewable energy for US and Canadian operations.

Clorox attained zero-waste-to-landfill status in over half of its facilities and 80% of its plants, and reached 88% of its goal to have 100% recyclable, reusable or compostable packaging by 2025.

Clorox was named an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Safer Choice partner of the Year for the sixth time for its manufacturing of products that contain ingredients the EPA has determined are safer for human health and the environment.
