The Indie 360 Conference & Pavilion was back at NYSCC Suppliers’ Day 2022 in New York City, which was held last week at the Jacob K. Javits Center. A special section inside the long-running, successful industry trade show and conference run by the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (NYSCC), Indie 360 features a select cohort of brands that are onsite to showcase their finished beauty and personal care products.
The Indie 360 concept was unveiled in 2021 when NYSCC’s Suppliers’ Day was held in November, disrupted from its normal cadence by the covid pandemic.
Like last year, brands showcased at the Indie pavilion have unique stories—from their founder’s “aha!” moments to their pathway to launch to the ingredients in their formulation.
This year’s companies were Canada Scent Labs, Dr. Lili Fan, High on Love, I-on Skincare, Lamik Beauty, Malibu Apothecary, Onekind, Priori, Redmint, Shielded Beauty, Sunrise Session and Touch in Sol.
Attendees and exhibitors at NYSCC were able to meet with each brand to learn more about their products, touch and feel their formulations and packaging, and speak with key stakeholders—chemists, marketing executives and brand founders. NYSCC asked attendees to vote for their personal favorite, with the winner named the Indie 360 People’s Choice Award. Votes were submitted though a mobile app this year.
Sunrise Session Founder and CEO Ben Stern is no stranger to the limelight; in 2016 as a 16-year-old he appeared on Shark Tank (Season 7) pitching shampoo in ball shape that would eliminate the need for a plastic bottle in the shower stall. He secured a deal with Mark Cuban during the show.
While there have been some ups and down since his appearance, his company, Nohbo Inc., recently opened a factory in Palm Bay, FL, has become a Certified B Corp., and with Sunrise Session, has rolled out its first consumer brand.
Sunrise Session currently offers shampoo, conditioner and body wash in Nohbo’s water-soluble pod, as well as solid format soap sheets that the brand calls “soap slips.”
There were two runners-up in this year’s competition; Malibu Apothecary and I-on Skincare were neck-in-neck in the voting, according to Daniela Ciocan of Access Beauty Insiders, who curates the participants in the Indie 360 Pavilion.
The Indie 360° Program at Suppliers’ Day was made possible by the support of BASF, Grant Industries, Lubrizol, luluble and TRI-K. Luciana Coutinho, founder of luluble, Inc. served as moderator of Indie 360.
