The Household and Commercial Products Association annual meeting last month drew 370 attendees; that’s up from the 2021 annual meeting, but still not at HCPA’s pre-covid 2019 attendance (386). Still, the improvement underscores members’ desire to reconnect, according to Association executives.

“After two years of virtual and hybrid events, it was great to see so many members in-person at the Annual Meeting,” said Alexandra Hayes, SVP-communications & public affairs. “Our attendance numbers are almost back to pre-covid numbers, which is exciting to see and shows just how much attendees value the conversations and connections they can only get from being in-person.”

During the general session, attendees heard HCPA President and CEO Steve Caldeira’s state-of-the-association presentation. Afterwards, Major Garrett, CBS News’ chief Washington correspondent, provided a review of the 2022 US election and gave some predictions on what to expect in 2024.

Elections, Past and Future

After Democrats held on to the Senate and a Red Wave never materialized in the House (although Republicans did gain a majority), Garrett explained why so many pundits got the results wrong—again.

“Voters surprise you and that’s a good thing!” he explained. “They tell pollsters one thing and do another.”

Garrett said he has never seen an election hinge on a single issue like abortion rights impacted the 2022 results. He called it a difference maker in key areas of the country.

What do the results mean for President Biden? With a slim majority, presumed incoming Speaker of House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) will have a tough time slowing down the President’s agenda.

“The House only functions when the majority imposes its will,” according to Garrett.

Some of the issues that the House is expected to take on include:
• Hunter Biden investigation;
• Impeachment of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over US border security; and
• An investigation into Dr. Anthony Fauci’s handling of the US covid response.

As for 2024, Garrett said it is entirely possible that there is a rematch of 2020 between former President Donald J. Trump and President Biden. If that’s the case, it could come down to two competing messages; Trump’s “You don’t know how bad things will get” v. Biden’s “You don’t know how great things are going to be.”
