This year marks the 28th anniversary of “Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work.”
The event, started 1993 by Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation, was designed to "make girls visible, valued, and heard in the workforce,” according to the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Foundation. A decade later it was expanded to include boys under the rebranded name Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work.
Yes, we know the pandemic has meant that many of us have been sharing our workspaces with our offspring for far too long. But for many businesses, sons and daughters are part and parcel to the success of their operations. Of the 28.8 million small businesses in America, 19% are family-owned, and family businesses range in size from two people (including the owner) to thousands of employees, according to SCORE, a nonprofit organization that provides education and mentorship for small businesses.
But success isn’t guaranteed when offspring are involved. Only 30% of family businesses survive the transition from first to second-generation ownership, according to SCORE, and even fewer (12%) of family businesses survive the transition from second to third-generation ownership.
In honor Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day, we have compiled a quick list of parent-child businesses in beauty, home and personal care.
The theme for 2021’s Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is “Boldly Moving Forward.” From corporate giants with huge market share to fledgling startups with big dreams, we think it is a fitting moniker for the companies listed below.
This list is by no means exhaustive—so if your business is a mom-pop-and-kid shop and you want to be included here, reach out to me cesposito@rodmanmedia.com.
Estée Lauder Companies
Perhaps the highest profile business that falls under the scope of family business is The Estée Lauder Companies. While the Estée Lauder Company went public in 1995, the third generation—William, Aerin and Jane—are now engaged in its leadership.
Elizabeth Grant Skincare
Elizabeth Grant is founder/CEO, and daughter Marion Witz, is president. Margot Grant Witz, Grant’s granddaughter is a VP. This brand was featured in our May 2020 Indie Inc feature.
Pili Ani
Rosalina Tan is the founder of this brand that taps into the oil extract from the Pili tree; her business partner is daughter Mary Jane Ong.
Park Perfection
Stefanie Parks is CEO of a newly formed skin care company that sells an eye treatment created by her father, a dermatologist.
Nala
Mother-daughter team Mila Juristovski Bosnic and Ada Juristovski are the co-founders of this deodorant company based in Vancouver. The duo spoke with Happi about their brand in 2019.
Bella Skin Beauty
After years of watching her daughter try product after product to help with her acne, Diana Shneider knew she had to take matters into her own hands by developing the perfect line of natural, luxurious products that would target their individual concerns. The solutions she created for her daughter Alex have turned into a company they run together.
Cellular MD
Skin cancer surgeon and dermatologist Dr. Ronald Moy and his daughter Erin Moy are the duo behind Cellular MD. The brand touts “bio-advanced” skin health products.
Farmasi
In 1998, founder Dr. C. Tuna and his son, Omer Hakan Tuna, established Tanalize Cosmetics where he manufactured cosmetics products ranging from personal to skin care. In 2003, they founded Farmasi Cosmetics, a brand that is now sold more than 125 countries. The third generation of the Tuna family is now playing an active role in furthering the company’s reach; Sinan Tuna was named CEO North America in September 2020.
Osea Malibu
Founder Jenefer Palmer and her daughter Melissa Palmer (CEO) are at the helm Osea Malibu, which sells range of clean beauty and personal care products
Cococare
Joanne Schlesinger has been appointed president of Cococare. She is the first woman in the company’s history to hold this position and is the second generation to lead the family-owned company that was founded in 1969 by her father, Gerald Dubin.
Sade Baron
There is also a mother-daughter duo behind the curtain at Sade Baron, which makes personal products including soap, body care and moisturizers.
Colorado Aromatics
It is mother-son at Colorado Aromatics Cultivated Skin Care, described as a farm-to-skin care brand. The company was founded by Dr. Cindy Jones and her son, Leo Wahl, works as an operations manager.
Botanical Bee Apothecary
Dena Selert (founder and CEO) and her daughter Chrys are the team behind Botanical Bee Apothecary, a Washington-based skin care brand that offers a range of products including acne care.
S.O.S./Sense of Self Studio
Ricquel Monique is founder of this holistic “slow beauty” skin care brand that sells products locally and just opened a storefront on Esty. Her mom, who helps with marketing, has a role in the supply chain, too. Monique uses milk from her mom’s goats in her soap, as well as herbs and florals that she grows uses in some of her products. “And she is an amazing beta skin care tester for me, offering her honest opinion and helping me to improve the products,” Monique told Happi.
SC Johnson
I would be remiss to exclude one of the highest-profile companies in home care: SC Johnson. There have been five generations of Johnsons running this cleaning company that calls itself “A Family company at work for a better world.” Founder Samuel Curtis Johnson purchased a flooring business that became SC Johnson in 1886, and 101 years later, current chairman and CEO Fisk Johnson, joined the firm that’s home to Windex, Glade and Scrubbing Bubbles and owns Mrs. Meyers, Ecover and Method, too.
