MWV Named To The Dow Jones Sustainability Index
In recognition of its economic, environmental and social performance, MeadWestvaco Corporation (MWV) has been selected as a member of the 2008/2009 Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World). The global packaging company is included on the index for the fifth consecutive year based on its success integrating environmental sustainability and social values into core business objectives and economic performance, according to the company.
MWV also ranked best in class in the Containers & Packaging industry group for the fourth straight year, demonstrating outstanding leadership in criteria such as risk and crisis management, sustainable fiber and pulp, and corporate citizenship and philanthropy.
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes are the first global indexes tracking the financial performance of sustainability-driven companies worldwide. The DJSI World Index comprises the leading companies in terms of sustainability around the world. It captures the top 10% based on long-term economic, environmental and social criteria out of 2,500 companies worldwide.

Diamond Packaging Wins Five Awards in 2008 National Paperboard Competition
Diamond Packaging of Rochester, NY earned five awards in the 65th Annual National Paperboard Packaging Competition. Awards were announced at the 2008 Annual Meeting & Strategies Conference in New Orleans, LA.

Competing against hundreds of entries from around the country, Diamond Packaging received recognition by winning one Gold Award, three Excellence Awards and an Innovation Excellence Award.Diamond took the Excellence Award for Coty’s new Nautica My Voyage For Her packaging, which Diamond says radiates the brand’s personality and instantly attracts consumers‘ attention in the retail environment. The reverse tuck cartons feature a .018 SBS holographic foilboard complemented by foil stamping and embossing techniques. The graphics were achieved by offset printing UV black, UV white and one PMS color in-line with a UV gloss coating over the holographic portion of the carton. A dull stampable varnish was used on the lower white portion of the carton.
Overprinting the holographic foil with transparent blue ink creates a visual effect that captures the essence of ocean waves and summer breezes. The Nautica logo was stamped with pink foil. The bottom portion of the carton was stamped with opaque white foil and embossed with a crosshatch pattern. The company also won a Gold Award for its green-themed 2009 calendar, a popular promotional item given to customers and suppliers.
Applying Anti-Aging Creams the New Age Way
Fans of Garnier products should have a ball with the new applicator created for the brand’s anti-aging skin care line. Garnier has partnered with packaging maker Bramlage-Wiko to create a roll-on applicator for the Garnier Lifting Anti-Wrinkle Toning Cream. The company’s marketing campaign for the product states that the applicator was “specially designed to massage the skin on the face and neck” and is expected to help tone and hydrate the skin.
Access Business Group Honored with AmeriStar Package Award
The Access Business Group has been recognized for package excellence with an award from AmeriStar’s 2007 Package Competition for the Artistry essentials skin care line. Packaging engineers Nick Kavanaugh and Justin Sellers accepted the award at the AmeriStar Package Awards Reception during the Packaging Summit Expo and Conference. The skin care line’s packaging was chosen as a winner in the Health & Beauty Aids category.
P&G Files Infringement Lawsuit Against RNA
The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has filed a lawsuit against RNA Corporation, Blue Island, IL, for the infringement of its Herbal Essences intellectual property, including trademark, trade dress and design patents. The suit, filed last month in the U.S. Federal District Court for the Southern District of Ohio in Cincinnati, involves the company’s Herbal Essences logo and the unique design of the Herbal Essences shampoo and conditioner bottles. P&G claims RNA, a private label manufacturer, is distributing shampoo and conditioner products under the name Hydrating Herbal Shampoo and Hydrating Herbal Conditioner, which infringe upon the Herbal Essences intellectual property rights.
At press time, P&G is requesting that RNA Corporation be ordered to stop distributing the infringing products, request the recall of existing inventory from store shelves and destroy the bottle molds.
Environmentally-Preferable Pumps Meet RoHS Standards
All components of GoatThroat Pumps have now been certified to meet stringent new worldwide regulations aimed at reducing or eliminating materials hazardous to the environment, according to the company. The GoatThroat Pump series of products now meets current and prospective regulations.
