The company said "a significant portion" of the manufacturing done in Chatsworth, Calif. would be sent to other facilities, including a new plant in Jonesboro, Ark. It also said it would consolidate its warehouse and offices in Chatsworth.
Alberto-Culver said the layoffs would be done by the end of June 2010.
It said it expects to take restructuring charges of about $8 million, including about $5 million in cash charges for severance, contract termination and other exit costs.
In April, the Melrose Park, IL-based company reported that its second-quarter profit fell 3% to $28.1 million, while revenue fell 1.4% to $344.3 million.
