Unique ‘Hands-On’ Hair Care Symposium is Aug. 24-26
The Society of Cosmetic Chemists will hold a “Hair Care Technology Symposium and Hands-On Lab Experience,” Aug. 24-26 at the Glenpointe Marriott in Teaneck, NJ, with the lab sessions located at Fairleigh Dickinson University in nearby Hackensack, NJ.
This symposium will feature formulating and testing non-reactive hair care products in three areas (students can take one, two or all three sessions). Symposium session 1 will cover shampoos, session 2 will cover conditioners and session 3 covers styling products. The courses for all three sessions are set up to be part lecture and part lab. The lecture will be held at the Glenpointe Marriott Hotel from 8:30 a.m.—12:00 noon, followed by a lunch, which will be provided by SCC at the hotel.
The hands-on, wet lab sessions, which will be conducted at the FDU Hackensack Campus, will start at 1:30 p.m. and finish at 6 p.m. each day. Attendees will formulate simple formulations in the lab. The lab formulation portion of each session will be broken down to four basic activities: Formulating specific formulations from a market profile, review special manufacturing procedures for incorporating specific ingredients, attaining specific physical and performance characteristics, and problem solving and troubleshooting common global issues.
Industry veterans and seasoned CEP instructors—John Bozza of International Specialty Products, Colleen Rocafort of BASF Corporation and Joseph Dallal ofInternational Specialty Products—will teach the courses.
The class is limited to 24 students. Registration fees include all course materials, lunch and coffee. The one-day fee (Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday) is $400 for SCC members, $600 for non-members and $250 for SCC student members; three-day fees are $900: $1,500 and $550, respectively.

Society of Cosmetic Scientists Elects New Officers
The 62nd annual general meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Scientists was held May 20 at the Kings Fund in London. Dene Godrey, 2009/10 president, chaired the meeting during which members elected new officers and council for 2010-11.
The new elected are Chris Flower, CTPA Ltd., president; Robin Parker, Acheson & Acheson, vice president; Emma Meredith, CTPA Ltd., hon. Secretary; Tony Gough, ISP Europe, hon. Treasurer. Members of council who were elected included Sara Bergstedt, Smink Ltd.; Louise Olivier, ISP Europe and Ian Prendergast, The Body Shop plc.

Naturally Carolina Symposium is Oct. 7-8
The Carolina Chapter of the SCC will hold an “all natural” symposium, Oct. 7-8 at the Kiawah Island Resort, Kiawah Island, SC.
The event will feature eight presentations, supplier tabletop displays, a welcome BBQ at The Sandcastle and annual golf outing at Osprey Point.

Abstracts Being Accepted For 2010 Technology Showcase
The Committee on Scientific Affairs of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists has announced the Call for Participation for the 2010 Technology Showcase to be held in conjunction with the SCC Annual Scientific Meeting, which is held in New York City, Dec. 9-10.
The showcase combines the details of a scientific poster session with the pragmatic directness of a commercial exhibit (trade names, demonstration prototypes, and supportive literature presented), according to SCC.
Participants are invited to present their information in a poster format to include experimental data, graphs, illustrations/ photos and prototypes on the technical attributes of the featured product or technology. Complete trade names as well as the INCI nomenclature is requested.
Abstracts are reviewed on a “first come-first served” basis, and there is a flat fee is $1,000 per poster.
Companies wishing to participate must submit an abstract of approximately 150-200 words of their intended presentation to the SCC’s Committee on Scientific Affairs (COSA) by Sept. 15.
