Analyzing Wage and Time Use Survey (TUS) data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), cleaning service Homeaglow has examined how long adults are spending on keeping their homes clean, how much this time would be worth based on the average hourly wage, and how the time spent of housework differs between men and women.
The latest data shows that while men have increased the time spent on housework by 34.78% since 2003 to 19 minutes (0.31 hours) per day, this still pales in comparison to women who do 49 minutes (0.82 hours) per day.
Based on these time-use figures and using the latest average hourly wage, it was found that across a year, women do $6,431 more hours of housework than men. Annually, men were revealed to do an average of $3,909 hours of housework, while women do $10,341 hours of household chores.
