In-Cosmetics, the leading trade exhibition for personal care ingredients, will take place in Milan from March 29-31. Alongside a host of ingredient manufacturers and suppliers, research laboratories and industry associations exhibiting at the show, will be the hotly anticipated scientific seminars.
There are two scientific seminars taking place on March 30 for the first time this year; the first will focus on nanotechnological and biotechnological applications in the field of cosmetics. Set to explore the latest scientific developments, safety issues and public responses that have arisen from these new technologies, this is sure to be one of the highlights of the educational program.
Biotechnology has brought huge advances in medicines and therapies (plus a number of benefits to the environment). Today it is impossible to conduct research around revolutionary ingredients without considering the use of biotechnology, particularly within the field of cosmetics. Similarly, nanotechnology offers a wealth of novel possibilities that have never before been found in traditional applications. That said, it is clear that manufacturers and suppliers will be keen to discuss the latest trends in both.
Kicking off the seminar will be Dr Kostas Kostarelos, Centre for Drug Delivery Research, University of London and Dr. Florian Weighardt, TeknoScienze Srl, looking at the basic concept of nanotechnology for cosmetics and exploring biotechnology as a tool for advanced cosmetics. Industry experts Dr. Gerhard J. Nohynek, L’Oréal and Dr. Fred Zuelli, Mibelle A.G. Biochemistry, will also give stimulating insights into anti-aging cosmetics based on novel plant biotechnologies and the safe use of nanotechnology in personal care products.
With more and more countries in Europe banning animal testing, nanotechnology and biotechnology are becoming two hugely innovative areas in modern cosmetics research. However, such vast developments also mean that concerns around their potential drawbacks have come to light. Debating the public opinions and regulatory issues that have arisen from the use of both techniques, Dr. Florian Schellauf, Colipa, and Dr Denis Koltsov, Nanotechnology Industries Association, will discuss industrial nanotechnology in the public eye and nanomaterials in cosmetic regulation. Concluding the seminar, Dr. Hermann Stamm, European Commission, will then give delegates an insight into the research addressing regulatory issues in cosmetics.
