Global cosmetics sales rose 4.1% for the first half of 2011, according to estimates from L'Oréal. In comparison, L'Oréal's sales for the period rose 4.9%. Although emerging markets are leading the way, Chairman Paul Agnon said that opportunities for growth remain in established markets.
"We believe the global cosmetics market should continue to grow in the second half at a rate similar to the first half, and we also confirm our ambition to outperform the market and to continue reinforcing our market share,” he told analysts.
To achieve that growth, L’Oréal executives are counting on several new launches including a relaunch of Elseve hair care line, Garnier’s Miracle Skin Perfector B.B. cream, and Lancôme’s Visionnaire serum.
Next year, the group plans to launch a new Yves Saint Laurent skin care line to grow this category, which represents only 10% of the brand’s sales, versus 40% for Lancôme, and is key to snagging market share in Asia. In China, Agon noted, skin care represents 70% of sales of luxury cosmetics.
