Shiseido is rolling out the limited edition Eudermine Revitalizing Essence ($60), a revival of the brand’s first-ever cosmetic product in its original packaging, to celebrate the company’s 140th anniversary.
Eudermine literally means “good skin” and the innovative formula delivers immediate hydration and improves the skin’s ability to retain moisture over time. First introduced in 1897, the formula has changed very little from those bottles sold in Japan’s first Western style pharmacy. The skin-softening lotion quickly developed a loyal following and the nickname “Shiseido Red Water” for its scarlet-hued bottle.
Created by Dr. Nagayoshi Nagai, the “father of modern Japanese pharmacology,” Eudermine’s staying power is testament to its advanced technology and efficacy. Today, it is considered a cult classic among makeup artists, many of whom use it as a mild exfoliant to prep lips, as well as the face, for color.
Although the packaging has been updated over the years, Eudermine remains one of the most iconic products in the now-extensive Shiseido brand, according to the company.
Key ingredients in Eudermine include a Bio-Hyaluronic Hyper Complex, a humectant, protects the skin from environmental stress and retains moisture; as well as Bio-Compatible Amino Acid and TMG that help remove excess dead cells to improve skin tone and texture. It features the fragrance of rain-washed peonies, said the company.
