Finding the right shade of makeup can be daunting for Black or Latino women. Maybe they should just go with MAC. According to recent report by Bloomberg, the Estée Lauder brand has become the No. 1 prestige cosmetic in India, Brazil, South Africa and Turkey. Now, MAC is making inroads in Nigeria, the biggest economy in Africa.
The brand “speaks to multiethnic consumers,” said Estée Lauder Chief Executive Officer Fabrizio Freda said in a telephone interview with Bloomberg.
Lauder introduced MAC in Brazil in 2002, and took over distribution there three years ago and began opening stores. Today, Karen Buglisi, the brand's global president, calls Brazil “our China” and sales took off when soap opera star Isis Valverde began using MAC makeup. Estee Lauder plans to open five free-standing stores there this year and will have 30 by the end of April.
