In summertime, most folks want to keep bugs at bay around the home in a natural way. After all, at a BBQ with friends and family, a light repellant spray on a table or in the trash is a simple way to keep the critters out of your picnic.
One company looking to go green with squelching bugs is Champion’s Natural Fly Spray. The formulation is made from a proprietary blend of essential oils and is a creation of Brooke Riggs, a rising senior in Chemical Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU).
“The idea came to me when I was taking organic chemistry and became curious in the chemicals I was using to keep the flies at bay,” said Riggs. She then decided to investigate the use of plant-based essential oils to repel flies. This lead to the creation of Champion’s Natural Fly Spray.
To bring the product to market, Riggs has decided to seek crowdfunding through Kickstarter.com to make the first production run. The “all-or-nothing” Kickstarter campaign is seeking to raise $15,000 in 30 days. Once, funded the first production run of Champion’s Natural Fly Spray will be completed and products will be shipped to backers by late August 2015.
