Unilever's newly dedicated production plant in Dubai Industrial Park is capable of producing 100,000 tonnes of liquid personal care products. Unilever said the plant would export 80-85% of its production. In fact, company executives said the plant will enable Unilever to cut market response time by 80% for brands like Dove, Clear and Vaseline.
The Dh1 billion ($272 million) plant represents another move in the Gulf nation's effort to become less dependent on oil. The site is certainly off to a good start—according to Sanjib Kakkar, Unilever’s executive vice-president for North Africa, the Middle East, Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, praised the plant’s accident-free construction process and rapid construction time — it was built in just 547 days, beating earlier predictions that it would be completed in 2017.
