The New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetics Chemists (NYSCC) has formed a new Scientific Committee. Members who met for the first time on June 14 to discuss the role of the committee in 2017 and beyond include: Mike Anthonavage (Vantage), Ben Blinder (Gattefosse), Giorgio Dell’Acqua (Dellacqua Consulting), Hani Fares (Ashland), Ying Jia, Elizabeth Kaufmann (NYU), Prithwiraj Maitra (Johnson & Johnson), Mohamed Omer (Revlon), Nadine Pernodet (Estée Lauder) and Jackie Wey (Reckitt Benckiser). Dell’Acqua is serving as chair.
A diverse group that brings more than 100 years of experience in varied categories from all sides of the cosmetics business—academia, supplier and finished goods—this inaugural team is charged with developing content for communication on cosmetic science, innovation, supply chain, product and ingredient development and other relevant topics for the industry using NYSCC’s blog, the official journal Cosmeticsope and social media.
“We will elevate the NYSCC by improving our scientific offer, by giving a balance view of the industry from different angles but with a common strategy, by building more strategy behind events and communication, by increasing our network and therefore reaching out more,” Dell’Acqua told Happi.
The committee will work very closely with the editorial board of Cosmetiscope and NYSCC chairs for PR, social media and events to coordinate the communication effort.
According to Marie Thadal of Coptis, chair 2017 NYSCC, the genesis of this new committee was “our desire to provide quality programs to our members. We don’t want to proceed with business as usual. Going forward, we want to ensure that we present in our monthly programs, at Suppliers’ Day and in publications, content that is on target, relevant— and without a doubt—necessary for our members to be successful in their current roles.”
NYSCC’s Suppliers Day is a must-attend event for the cosmetics industry that reaches well beyond its metro New York region. This year’s Suppliers Day (held in May) drew nearly 9000 people from 27 countries to the Javits Center in New York City—a new venue as the show had outgrown its former location in Edison, NJ. NYSCC’s 2018 Suppliers’ Day will be held May 15 & 16, 2018, once again at the Javits Center.
The new committee will also use news outlets, blogs and magazines to reach consumers and the general public outside the industry to divulge scientifically proved information and reduce the misinformation on cosmetics and cosmetic science.
Further, the group will reach out to academia to invite researchers at colleges and universities to speak at NYSCC events and to contribute as advisors on specific topics.
Over the course of the meeting, it was apparent that the team members have many great ideas, and NYSCC’s constituents, and the cosmetics industry at large, will benefit from the collective efforts of this new board moving forward.
