FMCG companies are reducing and even eliminating plastic from their packaging equations, and so are retailers. The Financial Times recently highlighted several forward-thinking stores that have rethought the entire packaging process. For example, The Source Bulk Foods debuted nearly a decad ago and over the years, has expanded into Ireland, New Zealand, Singapore and the UK. In Edinburgh, The Refillery offers a wide range of foods and refill cleaning products all under the moniker: "Rethink, Reorganise, Refill."
Also in Europe, Original Unverpackt, Berlin, offers a home-delivery, cargo bike service. The store offers a range of food, soaps and home cleaning products.
In Los Angeles, The Waste Less Shop sells tree-free toilet paper and bulk household cleaning supplies. Moreover, with every purchase, the shop plants a tree through One Tree Planted charity. The Waste Less Shop also offers essential oils and beauty products.
Small steps all, but they are all examples of the slow march toward package-free platforms.
