By 2025, one billion women in the world will be menopausal. Every year, 25 million women have menopausal symptoms, according to Grand View Research. GVR predicts the menopause market will reach $23 billion by 2028. They’re numbers that the beauty industry can’t ignore—yet, menopause is often treated as the elephant in the room, according to Naomi Watts.
The star of King Kong and Mulholland Drive works in an industry where many women are told they’re “done” by the time they reach their mid-forties. Watts is fighting ageism in Hollywood and Mainstreet USA with Stripes, a new line of beauty and wellness products. The 11-item range debuts October 11 on Onda Beauty, Amazon and the brand’s website, www.iamstripes.com
To create Stripes, Watts teamed with Amyris, a biotech-company with its own lineup of beauty brands. The Stripes collection includes cooling face mist, thickening scalp treatment, hydrating vaginal gel, probiotic supplements and body oils. Nearly all the formulas contain ectoine, a bacteria-derived compound that is said to protect cellular function and combat dry skin. Another key ingredient is squalene, Amyris’ sugar-cane derived material that can be found in so many of its beauty brands. Stripes’ formulas also include vitamins, edelweiss extract and magnesium, which is linked to body temperature regulation. Nine of the 11 products are packaged in glass bottles and two are refillable.
Watts insists products are only part of the Stripes story. The brand is building a community where women can share their menopause stories, “from the joys and the tears to the flashes and the fears.”
