Sephora unveiled two global sustainability seals at the ChangeNow summit, which is taking place in the Grand Palais Ephémèrein Paris.
The seals, “Clean at Sephora” and “Planet Aware at Sephora,” will appear on beauty products in April and aim to provide more transparency to how the retailer communicates on formulas and environmental commitments across its global markets.
One-third of Sephora’s carbon emissions stem from its own operations, with the remaining generated by the products it sells, per reports.
Two years in the making, the retailer developed the seals with expertise from external environmental and scientific experts.
Brands with effective formulas will be packaged with the “Clean at Sephora” label, which meet global regulatory standards and avoid certain ingredients. Of the 133 that qualify, Drunk Elephant, Fenty Skin, Gisou, Haus Labs, Ilia, Kosas, K18, Merit, Tatcha and the 7 Virtues are included.
To be granted the “Planet Aware at Sephora” seal, Sephora-set criteria must be met for ingredient sourcing and formulation, packaging, corporate commitments and consumer transparency. Specifically, 32 required criteria needed to be obtained across those particular pillars. When the seal is launched, 40 brands will carry it including Amika, Biossance, Briogeo, By Rosie Jane, Caudalie, Glow Recipe, Saie, Skinfix and Unbottled.
The seals will appear in North America, Europe, and the UK in April, with the Middle East in May. Brazil and Mexico are slated for September. China’s rollout is slated for 2025.
