The Green Amazon was the destination for Apoena Biotech’s second bioprospecting expedition, conducted earlier this year in the ecological corridor of the Tapajós National Forest, Pará, Brazil. The project seeks alternative sustainable ingredients for the personal care and cosmetics industry
“The Blue and Green Amazon expeditions aim to search for microorganisms in distinct biomes, so each can address specific questions and, consequently, meet the demands of an increasingly responsible and aware market. For example, “How do corals protect themselves from the sun at low tide?” asked Patricia Mendes, marketing director at Apoena Biotech (stand 1P88A).
Apoena Biotech researchers collected roots, stems, leaves, fruits and soil to uncover innovations for the beauty industry, including:
· The Discovery of New Biological Actives with innovative properties for the development of cosmetics and personal care products;
· Claims of Sustainability and Environmental Responsibility through the Replacement of Synthetic Chemicals with Biotechnological Alternatives;
· Innovation in Safe, Effective and High-Performance Formulations;
· Contribution to the Circular Economy, promoting the use of renewable resources and waste reduction;
· International Partnerships and Collaborations, expanding the reach and impact of innovations beyond the personal care and cosmetic market;
· Preservation of the Amazon Microbiome and Responsible Production Scaling: enabled by bioprospecting resources, technologies and bioprocesses, facilitating access to biological actives without the necessity of further sourcing from the forest.
