There are many careers in the beauty category. The New York Society of Cosmetic Chemistry focused on mentorship and career development in a special session that explained some of the roles to a group of students (a.k.a. perspective job hunters).
“There are so many exciting and different paths in our industry,” said Moderator Ava Atri, co-chair of NYSCC.
During the session, different functions beyond the "bench" were details, such as those in process engineering, packaging, regulatory affairs, performance evaluation, technical sales and procurement.
To help explain the roles, Atri used some concrete examples from everyday life; for example, she described “scale up” as knowing how to take one’s favorite mac and cheese recipe that serves four and make it for a family reunion.
In a panel presentation, attendees also heard from a group of successful women working in the beauty business—Ashley Hutson of Supergoop!, Claudia Pinzón of Avon, Daleen Zakaib of Grant Industries, Dyamond Dieudonne of Laboratories Expanscience, and Jennifer King of Symrise.
All of the panelists shared their pathway into the beauty space. Each noted the benefit of internships.
“Internships are important,” noted Pinzón, who noted that her pathway into the beauty space came through an internship with L’Oréal. “It opened my eyes, I enjoyed the internship and I worked with a great chemist,” she said.
The application period closes on May 13. The start dates for the internships are in June. The NYSCC will introduce the first class of interns at the Chapter’s annual Golf Outing in July.

NYSCC's 2024 Internship Program
The NYSCC, in fact, is hosting its first internship program this year. It aims to support students in gaining hands-on experience with companies in the cosmetic industry. The 8 to10-week internships (10 in total) will take place on site at ingredient supplier, contract manufacturer and finished goods companies in hair, skin, body, oral and color care. The pay is $20 per hour and a housing stipend is included if necessary. Spots are open to US college sophomores and juniors (undergrad 2025-2026) majoring in cosmetic science or related scientific fields (chemistry, biology, engineering, pharmaceutical science, etc.) with a minimum GPA of 3.0.The application period closes on May 13. The start dates for the internships are in June. The NYSCC will introduce the first class of interns at the Chapter’s annual Golf Outing in July.
