If there is one positive thing that has come out of the pandemic, it’s a renewed focus on health and the importance of wellness.
The impetus for Calvin Quallis, founder of Scotch Porter, to launch the brand’s new Beard, Hair, Skin Immune Support Superfood Supplement came from his personal health journey and from seeing people around him choose to live healthier lifestyles during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“I have experienced the benefits of holistic wellness practices. Not just losing close to 70 pounds over the last 18 months, but also meditating, consuming whole food powders and shakes, and reciting affirmations to name a few,” Quallis says.
He found that during the pandemic more people were becoming interested in taking care of themselves. Quallis explains the changes in behavior that he noticed: “When I go out, people are running that I’ve never seen exercising before, and at the grocery store in the healthy food aisle, I’m seeing guys that look new just like me.”
“The time just felt right,” he adds. “It’s the pandemic. Immunity boosting is huge. I tried to come up with a clever way to get guys to try wellness products.”
Quallis made it his mission to share with other men the benefits of holistic wellness practices and wholesome ingredients.
Feeling Healthy Inside and Out
With the belief that what happens on the inside of our bodies is just as important as what happens on the outside, each capsule of Scotch Porter’s new Superfood Supplement contains clean enhancement properties, including: biotin to help strengthen hair, plant-based horsetail extract to help improve circulation and promote healthy hair follicles and Irish moss powder which contains anti-bacterial and anti-viral skin-boosting properties.
Many of the ingredients in the supplement were inspired by ingredients that Quallis puts in his morning shake every day. In addition to his own research, Quallis also worked with a partner who was an expert in vitamins and supplements to pick the best ingredients and create the formula. Overall, Quallis says the development process lasted about two years.
As a clean brand, there were also many ingredients that Quallis avoided when developing the supplement. Ingredients on the brand’s “no list” include: parabens, sulfates, petroleum, phthalates, mineral oil, talc, BHA, formaldehyde, parrafin, silicones and more. The supplement is also vegan, gluten-free and non-GMO verified.
The product comes in Scotch Porter’s Beard Health Kit, which includes a 30-day supply of the supplement in addition to a 1oz Leave-In Beard & Hair Conditioner Spray and a 1oz Shape + Hold Beard Balm.
The Supplement is available exclusively at select Target locations beginning February 2021.
What’s Next for the Brand?
“Our mission is to help men look, feel and live their best, most fulfilled lives. We’ve always felt that although we have great products, we have an obligation to do much more when it comes to helping people.”
In the future, Quallis says we can expect to see much more content from the brand that adds value to people’s lives beyond offering skincare and grooming products. For example, the brand has plans to offer fitness classes online, healthy cooking demonstrations, conversations about mental wellness and discussions to help guys feel more comfortable opening up and talking to others.
Scotch Porter is also working on reducing the environmental impact of its packaging. Right now, its packaging is not completely sustainable, Quallis admits, but over the next two years the brand is developing an initiative to change all of its existing packaging to make it better.
Earlier this week, Scotch Porter announced the expansion of its hair collection on the shelves of nearly 1,900 Walmart locations nationwide, propelling the growth of the brand's retail footprint and positioning the company for accelerated distribution.
