It’s no secret that onions offer a multitude of health benefits. These spicy vegetables are members of the Allium genus of flowering plants that also includes garlic, shallots, leeks and chives and contain various vitamins, minerals and potent plant compounds that have been shown to promote health in many ways.
Vedix, India’s largest ayurvedic beauty brand, is harnessing the power of onions in a new hair care line that is now available in the US online at Amazon. The range consists of onion hair oils, shampoos and a hair mask that promote hair growth.
Specifically, the onion range consists of three hair oils, four shampoos and three hair masks customized as per doshas to resolve unique scalp and hair problems. And what, you may ask, is a dosha? According to Ayurveda, there are three Doshas: Vata (wind), Pitta (fire & water) and Kapha (water & earth). A unique combination of these three Ayurvedic principles (Doshas) are present in everyone and beauty products can be catered toward each dosha’s need—for example, dry skin or an oily scalp.
Vedix, a fast-growing, direct-to-consumer beauty brand, has created a dominant position in the Indian beauty market with its range of customized Ayurvedic oils, serums and shampoos.
According to the company, the range is designed to tap the full potential of the Palandu (onion). Onion’s high sulfur content is highly prized in Ayurvedic practices. Sulfur aids tissue repair, and strengthens hair, skin and fingernails. It improves skin's elasticity, thus preventing hair breakage. It also treats dandruff.
According to Jatin Gujrati, business head at the company, “Vedix continues being at the cutting edge of innovation and R&D in Ayurveda to deliver beauty solutions in a modern format. Customers are slowly understanding the importance of natural ingredients for their hair and onion is a key part of that shift.”
Hair loss is a common condition and can be caused by diet related factors such as nutrient deficiencies, which can negatively affect hair growth along with environmental factors, added Gujrati.
“Hair care is of primary importance today and Ayurveda believes that the dosha imbalances can affect various parts of our body, including hair and how well it grows,” he said.
As per Statista, the Indian haircare market is expected to grow nearly 6% a year through 2026. Additionally, the global onion oil market is projected to reach $112.6 million by 2030, according to a report by Allied Market Research.
