In the 2000s, Clean & Clear created Morning Burst with aim to help young people look forward to waking up and washing their face with the band’s ginseng and citrus scent-infused facial gel cleanser.
Roughly two decades later, the makers – whose parent company is HAPPI Top 50 company Kenvue – have reformulated the popular cleanser that includes vitamin C and Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA), the well-known skin-smoothing ingredient clinically proven to remove excess oil in oily-to acne-prone skin while respecting the skin barrier.
The reformulation is not related to the November 2023 recall at the wholesale level of two specific lots of Morning Burst Facial Cleanser due to micro contamination, the brand confirmed to HAPPI.
New Formulation
The new vegan formula is free of parabens, phthalates, sulfates, oils and dyes and not tested on animals. The cleanser continues to use soft, non-abrasive and non-plastic bursting beads that erupt when mixed with water to yield a foamy lather emitting a “burst” of vitamin C. The main difference of is the inclusion of Moodscentz technology, which links the power of scent and mood to “delight the senses,” per marketers.
According to Kenvue, MoodScentz – the property of Givaudan SA, which is used under license – is a patented ingredient technology used to create fragrances that trigger emotions.
“The uplifting scent awakens your senses and leaves you feeling ready to take on your day,” said Hams Elshaikh, R&D development scientist at Kenvue. “The product removes dirt, oil and impurities that build up overnight.”
Improved Packaging
The packaging has also been upgraded. The new Morning Burst Cleanser is now recyclable. The pump was replaced with an easy-to-open cap and the bottles are now made with 50% recycled plastic.
Per Kenvue, by swapping out the pump, almost 8 million pumps will be removed from landfills per year based on average sales from 2020-2022.
