AkzoNobel has launched an essential new ingredient for outdoor cleaning products that successfully meets stringent US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) environmental standards without compromising on performance. Developed by the company’s surface chemistry business, Berol DR-B1 surfactant is suitable for both consumer and commercial applications that involve direct release (by-passing sewage treatment).
Approval for direct release means formulators will be allowed to put the “Safer Choice” label on a product intended for use as an outdoor cleaner. Direct release is a subcategory of EPA’s “Safer Choice” (formerly DfE). Materials approved for direct release must meet more stringent standards for aquatic toxicity and biodegradation. There are very few surfactants that can meet the higher standards required for direct release so those seeking to formulate a cleaning product and meet the direct release standards have a very limited choice in surfactant selection.
Suitable for a wide range of outdoor applications where very low environmental impact is a priority, the main uses for Berol DR-B1 surfactant are expected to include the cleaning of mass transit vehicles such as vessels, trains and buses, car washes and exterior house and garden furniture cleaning.
