Johnson & Johnson has issued a QuickFire Challenge to Black innovators in skin health. Focus areas include acne and post-acne scarring, hyperpigmentation, scalp care and sun protection. The Challenge winner will receive up to $50,000 in grant funding, mentorship from the J&J family of companies and access to the JLabs ecosystem.
J&J notes that in the US, only 3% of dermatologists are Black, and skin health industry research skews toward light categories of Fitzpatrick scale (I-IV) vs. darker categories (V-VI). In addition to health disparities caused by lack of research and Black talent within the dermatology field, there is a gap in skin health consumer products available tailored to the needs of the Black community. On top of this, Black founders recieive just 1% of venture capital. According to J&J, this QuickFire Challenge offers an opportunity for US-based Black innovators working on potential skin and scalp health solutions to receive grant funding and mentorship to advance their science.
Submission deadline is January 22, 2021.To enter the challenge, click here
