The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) has appointed Nathan Sell as senior director of sustainability.
In this role, Sell will be responsible for leading, developing, and executing all facets of the ACI sustainability program, which began with an initial set of aspirational principles in 2004 and has evolved into a series of initiatives promoting and driving the sustainability progress of ACI members throughout the cleaning product supply chain.
“Nathan’s experience and expertise from working in the regulatory and cleaning product sectors, combined with his passion for sustainability, will allow ACI to build upon our recognized leadership throughout the supply chain,” said Dr. James Kim, ACI vice president, Science and Regulatory Affairs. “Working with our member companies, Nathan will enhance and strengthen our bold collective to combat climate challenge and waste, through our 1.5° Challenge and Circular Packaging initiatives.”
Sell joined ACI in 2020, serving as director of regulatory science where he was responsible for the development and management of research strategies related to the safety of cleaning product ingredients, and served as a point of contact for ACI’s chemical management and regulatory programs and helped expand scientific understanding of ACI chemistry tools and technologies. Prior to his work at ACI, Sell held positions at the Environmental Protection Agency, where he was a chemical review manager in the office of pesticide programs; a technical writer and dditor for the office of science coordination and policy; and an ORISE research participant in the office of water where he worked on climate change adaptation and resilience.
Previously he was an editorial board member for the University of Pennsylvania’s WH2O Journal and a coordinator for the Initiative for Global Environmental Leadership at the Wharton School. He also served as a corps member for Teach for America in Philadelphia, Pa.
Sell graduated Trinity College in Hartford, CT with a bachelor of science degree in biology and a minor in environmental science. He holds a master’s degree in environmental studies with a concentration in environmental sustainability from the University of Pennsylvania.
EPA's Safer Choice
In other news, ACI was just recognized by EPA’s Safer Choice program as a Partner of the Year. EPA specifically recognized its work contributing toxicological reviews that resulted in eight chemicals being added to EPA's Safer Chemical Ingredients List and ACI's partnering with the Good Housekeeping Institute to host its first-ever cleaning summit, which included a panel on ingredient transparency that discussed how the Safer Choice program helps consumers find products with safer ingredients, as reported in Happi.
