The Outset, a line of clean beauty formulas from Scarlett Johansson, debuted in Sephora stores in the US this week. The Outset is also available at www.sephora.com. The line includes micellar cleanser, vegan collagen serum, squalane moisturizer, niacinamide night cream and vitamin C eye cream. Prices range from $32 to $54.
According to Johansson, The Outset delivers exactly what consumers want: a clean, nonirritating line of essentials that is the everyday foundation for great skin.
Clean beauty, of course, is having a moment. But cosmetic chemists struggle with the term "clean" and what it really means.
At a recent seminar developed by the New York Chapter of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, marketers and suppliers debated the concept of "clean beauty" and what it means to consumers.
"Being clean is critical to our success,” explained Goldberg. “In a survey of our customers, clean formulas ranked as the No. 2 reason customers choose to shop with us (behind quality results),” said Mallory Goldberg of Glow Recipe. “Brands and retailers listened to consumers’ requests for more transparency and cleaner formulas. The expectation around clean has evolved beyond formula ingredients and packaging."
