Soap maker Dr. Bronner’s is a founding sponsor of the upcoming MAPS Psychedelic Science Conference. Scheduled for June 19-23, 2023, in Denver, CO, the conference is expected to be the largest and most influential psychedelic conference in history, with an estimated 10,000 people registered to attend.
David Bronner, cosmic engagement officer (a.k.a. CEO) of Dr. Bronner’s and board member of MAPS, is scheduled to speak at the conference. Bronner will review pathways and policy strategies for integrating psychedelic medicines and therapies into US society. His talk will discuss pros and cons of regulated access vs. self-regulating communities and churches in the context of decriminalization; and examine which populations are served, and broader questions of equitable access, as well as impacts on Indigenous sources of medicine
At the conference, Dr. Bronner’s will also sponsor of Deep Space, an interactive art zone and lounge where attendees can engage in yoga and movement, music, dancing, exercises to promote social-connection, storytelling, and much more. Further, the company has also produced a limited-edition “Heal Soul!” label for its 4oz. Pure-Castile Liquid Soap, which will be provided freely to conference attendees.
The Psychedelic Science Conference is a biennial event organized by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), a nonprofit. It features presentations by leading researchers and advocates in the field of psychedelics, covering a wide range of related topics, as well as the ethical, legal, and cultural implications of their research and use. The conference has been held every two years since 2013. MAPS was founded in 1986.
“We support the work of MAPS and many other organizations that are bringing psychedelic medicines and healing to the world,” said Bronner in a statement. “The promise of psychedelics to heal and open hearts and minds, and address PTSD, depression, addiction, and a host of other mental health challenges, is enormous. We’re sponsoring the Psychedelic Science Conference to promote critical education and discussions, as well as to advance discourse around ethics and conservation related to Indigenous rights and traditional plant medicines.”
A longtime advocate of drug policy reform and psychedelic-assisted therapy, Dr. Bronner’s has given more than $20 million over the last three years to organizations in support of psychedelic-assisted therapy and plant medicine initiatives. In 2022, Dr. Bronner’s funded more than 70 organizations working in drug policy reform and related advocacy, including Chacruna Institute, Drug Policy Alliance, Fireside Project, Heroic Hearts Project, Indigenous Peyote Conservation Initiative, International Center for Ethnobotanical Education Research & Service, The Ancestor Project, Sacred Garden Community Church, Sacred Plant Alliance, Society for Psychedelic Outreach Reform and Education, Spearitwurx, Students for Sensible Drug Policy, Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions, and many others. The company is a major supporter of MAPS, and its efforts to gain Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval for MDMA-assisted therapy. Dr. Bronner’s gave $1 million to MAPS in 2022 and has contributed more than $6.7 million to MAPS over the past 16 years. David Bronner has been a board member of MAPS since 2015.
